Earl W. “Bill” Allen, age 89 of Brooklyn, died Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn with Pastor John Dodds officiating. Burial will be at Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. A memorial fund has been established.
Bill is survived by his wife Norma Dayton Allen, brothers-in-law Larry Dayton (Anna Grace) of Brooklyn, and Robert Little of Albia; nieces and nephews, Becky (Richard) Hammer of Newton, Brenda (Dave) Jermier of Dallas Center, Keith (Kathy) Little of Albia, Steve (LaVerne) Dayton of Arroyo Grande, CA, Robin (Ron) Miller of Mason City, Gaylon (Janet) Dayton of Clive, Carol (Pat) Croke of Forrest Grove, OR, Eva Heller of Denver, Richard (Leila) Allen of Staples, MN, Helen (John) Riggs of Staples, MN, Charlotte (Ward) Barton of Eagle Bend, MN and Elsie (William) Riggs of Coon Rapids, MN, and many many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Evan Elliot Allen.
Earl William Allen was born December 13, 1921 in rural Montezuma, Iowa, the son of William Henry Allen and Elsie Evans Allen. He attended the Poweshiek County schools and Brooklyn High School. Bill served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 -1945. He and Norma Eloida Dayton were united in marriage on December 12, 1944 in Brooklyn, Iowa. The couple farmed for many years between Montezuma and Deep River. He was well known in the dairy industry. They moved to Brooklyn in 2008. Bill was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, the Knights of Pythias, DAV, the Farm Bureau, and the Linger Longer Club.
Bill enjoyed building model airplanes, latch hooking, reading, string art and puzzles. He was extremely fond of Norma’s apple pie, bacon and ice cream.
