Harold E. Eckman, age 87, of Amana, died Monday evening, January 6, 2014 at his home at Lake View Village in Amana. There will be no services at this time. Memorials may be contributed to Safe Haven of Iowa County in his memory. Kloster Funeral Home Marengo is assisting the family with arrangements.
He is survived by his son David Eckman and wife Marina of Amana; a grandson Greg Eckman of Amana; three great-grandchildren Melanie and Nichole Eckman, and Talli Krueger; and three great- great- grandchildren Aubrey, Kaylee, and Arya. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucille, and a brother Richard.
Harold E. Eckman was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on November 11, 1926 the son of Realand Eckman and Eleanor Waddell Eckman. Following his education in the Marshalltown schools, Harold enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He and Lucille Krauss were united in marriage and made their home in Cedar Rapids. Harold was employed for many years as a maintenance supervisor at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. He retired in 1988. The couple lived in Amana for the last 27 years.
Harold enjoyed motorcycle riding, and was an avid airplane fan. He enjoyed flying and overhauled and flew a bi-plane. He was a member of the Masons and Shriners, and the Experimental Aircraft Association in earlier years. In his free time, Harold liked to garden, and work with stained glass, making Tiffany style lamps.
