Vernon E. Garringer age 82 of Montezuma formerly of Parnell, died Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the Mayflower Home in Grinnell.  Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 16, 2009, First United Methodist Church, Marengo with Rev. Ben Wilson officiating.  Interment will be in Yankee Point Cemetery, Parnell with military honors.  The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

Vernon is survived by a son, Scott Vernon Garringer (Pamela) of Hope, Arkansas; two daughters, Barbara Jean Weldon (David) of Parnell and Sandra Kay Maddocks (James) of Montezuma; 8 grandchildren, Jamie Thompson, Cary Dischler, Jon Werner, Kennon Harter, Tonch Weldon, Ginger Russel, Crystal Wolf, and Michael Garringer; 25 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, James C. Garringer (Jeanne) and William L. Garringer (Darlyn) both of Williamsburg; and a sister Betty Van Dee of Vining.  He was preceded in death by his wife in 1990, his parents, 4 brothers, Howard Brown, and Keith, Orville, and Ralph Garringer.

Vernon Eugene Garringer was born July 28, 1927 in Parnell, Iowa, the son of Carl L. and Esta M. Brown Garringer. He attended the Iowa County schools. He married Marilyn Kirkpatrick on September 4, 1950 in Deep River.  He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal in Korea and Japan from 1950-1952 and received a purple heart.   In earlier years he was a member of the Methodist Church in Williamsburg.  He worked for Winborns & Swift Feeds for 31 years and Nissley Auto for 9 years.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and gardening.  Vernon loved his family and will be deeply missed by them.
