Katy W. Gunzenhauser, age 97 of Amana, died Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 5, 2011, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana with Elder Michael Shoup officiating.  Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Homestead. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the church. Memorials may be contributed to the Essence of Life Hospice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

Katy is survived by a daughter-in-law Irene Neumann Gunzenhauser of Ladora, a granddaughter Dawn Schlesselman and husband Glen; four great-grandchildren, Evan Schlesselman (Courtney), Elissa Hawkins (Charles), Whitney Groomes (Zack), and Nicole Van Otegham (Andrew); and five great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are nephews Bill Leichsenring (Karen) and Wayne Schaufuss, nieces Kathie Kelly and Bonnie Kinnick (Craig); and her special friend Joyce Fels.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edmund in 1968, a son David in 1996, a daughter in infancy, a sister Lina Leichsenring, two brothers, Walter and Ray, and a great-grandchild Nicholas.

Kathryn Wilhelmina Schaufuss was born July 1, 1914 in High Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Emil and Katharine Haldy Schaufuss. She attended the High Amana School She worked in the community kitchen and did odd jobs. Katy married Edmund Karl Gunzenhauser on September 14, 1935 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. The couple farmed until Edmund’s death. In 1971 Katy moved to Amana. She began working at the Ox Yoke Inn in 1972 and retired in 1989.  Katy was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church until she moved to Amana. In 1970 she rejoined the Amana Church.  She enjoyed cooking and baking, feeding the birds, and working in the gardens tending her flowers.  When she was younger she enjoyed quilting and embroidery.
