Henry E. Hertel, age 91 of South Amana, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital, Marengo, Iowa. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 7, 2011, Middle Amana Community Church, Middle Amana, Iowa with Elder Harold W. Pitz officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the South Amana Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Middle Amana Community Church. Memorials may be contributed to the El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids or the Amana Church Society. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Henry is survived by his wife Helen of Colonial Manor in Middle Amana; a son Larry W. Hertel of South Amana; a daughter Lynda H. Flaherty (Brian) of South Lake, TX; two grandchildren, Kellie and B. Kyle Flaherty; and a brother Ronald Hertel of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Billy.
Henry Emil Hertel was born March 27, 1920 in South Amana, Iowa, the son of William F. and Helen Shoup Hertel. He received his education in the Middle Amana School. Henry served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945, serving in the China Burma India Theatre during World War II. He married Helen Berger on November 10, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Henry began his employment with Amana Refrigeration, working there for two years. He then worked at the Shell Station in Marengo. In 1953 he became manager and operator of the Phillips 66 Station in Homestead, retiring in 1989 after 36 years.
Henry was a member of the Amana Church Society, the Masonic Hope Lodge #175, and the El Kahir Shrine, Cedar Rapids as a member of the color guard.
