Esther Hattie Tschopp Lingo, age 97 of Marengo, died Friday, March 22, 2013 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, Marengo Memorial Hospital, Rose Haven Nursing Home, Care Initiatives Hospice, or the donor’s choice.
Esther was born June 9, 1915 east of Marengo in a farm home south of Highway 6 across from the current Iowa Valley Trailer Estates. She attended Aurora School for all elementary grades having the same instructor, Miss Nellie Nelson. She graduated as an honor student from elementary school. She then attended Marengo Carson High School for 4 years with many business courses. She was active in glee club, speech, and sang in St. John’s Lutheran Church choir. She was confirmed in March 1930. Esther was a member of the National Honor Society graduating in 1932. After graduating, she was fortunate during the depression to continue doing housework for an attorney and his wife.
On February 5, 1934, she was married to James Vestal Wayne Lingo at St. John’s Lutheran parsonage in Marengo by Rev. Theodore Rottman. The couple lived for a short time in Missouri and returned to Iowa to help Esther’s mom with farming at a farm south of Marengo. They purchased a home in Marengo in 1960. Esther then worked as a cook at the Marengo High School. She later became a secretary at Marengo Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1981.
Esther was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed baking cookies and pies for others. She liked to play bridge and other card games with family and friends. Esther loved caring for her flower gardens as long as she was able. She was an active member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, and Altar Guild. She was an honorary member of the Marengo American Legion Auxiliary. After retirement, she continued her work at church, volunteered at the hospital taking cookies and bananas to patients and staff, and donated pies to the Legion and church. Her volunteering continued until she moved to the Lodge on Lafayette in 2003. In 2007, she was moved to Rose Haven Nursing Home. Esther left this life at Rose Haven on Friday, March 22, 2013 surrounded by her daughters and caregivers.
Esther is survived by two daughters, Doris (Richard) Faas of Cedar Rapids, Marilynn (Robert) Stabenow of Janesville, IA; daughter-in-law, Janet Zimmerman of McKinney, TX; grandchildren, James (Wendy) Lingo of Mt. Dora, FL; Jeff (Heather) Lingo of Plano, TX; Dave Faas of Marion; Dawn (Jac) Spring of Winona, MS; Troy (Rebecca) Stabenow of Jefferson City, MO; Zakarij Stabenow of Waterloo, IA. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Helen Steinmetz Tschopp; her husband, Vestal Lingo in 1989; son, James Lingo in 1992; sister, Wilma Bruestle; and brother, Fritz Tschopp.
