Dorothy Marz, age 92 of Amana, died peacefully of natural causes on Friday morning, June 17, 2011 at Colonial Manor of Amana. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 20, at the Middle Amana Community Church followed by graveside services in South Amana, with Elder Kristie Yoder officiating. Visitation is Sunday, June 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Middle Amana Community Church. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy Berger was born February 26, 1919, in South Amana, the daughter of Herman Berger and Mary (Setzer) Berger. Dorothy attended the Amana schools. Following graduation, she was employed by various Amana businesses. She married Louis Marz on November 12, 1949. The couple later divorced.
Residing many happy years in Homestead, Dorothy was the consummate homemaker. She took delight in her family and enjoyed baking, embroidery, quilting, and gardening both vegetables and flowers. Dorothy displayed her faithfulness to God through stewardship to all living things and always welcomed people with a smile on her face and a sparkle in her eye. She was a member of the Amana Church Society, Homestead Welfare Club, and the Amana Heritage Society.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Frederick, Daniel and Adolph Berger and two sisters Christine Engelhaupt and Emilie Berger.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary (Tom) Burgher of Amana and son, Dr. Mark (Marti) Marz of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Laura (Keith) Simmonds, Andrew Marz, Liesl and Fritz Burgher; two great-grandchildren, Daniel and Anna Simmonds; and sisters Helen Hertel of Middle and Emma Johnson of Norwalk, California.
