Shirley Tompkins Mort, age 84 of Marengo, died Friday, May 30, 2014 at Rose Haven Nursing Home following an extended illness. Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be contributed to Rose Haven Nursing Home in Shirley’s name. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Melissa Murphy and husband Dennis of Vancleave, MS; two grandsons, Justin N. Murphy of Kenner, LA, and Joshua M. Murphy and wife Michelle of Ocean Springs, MS; three great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Matthew, and Karley Murphy of Ocean Springs; and a sister Barbara Tompkins Wilkinson of Marengo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard L. Mort, a son Richard J. Mort, and a sister Marjorie Tompkins Larson, and brothers-in-law John Wilkinson, and Al Larson.
Shirley Jean Tompkins was born April 2, 1930 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Benjamin and Edna Randolph Tompkins. She graduated from Marengo High School with the Class of 1948. She married Richard L. Mort, in Portsmouth, VA. She followed her husband while he served his country, living in several places, and working many jobs, all while raising her family. Richard died in 1974. Shirley returned to Marengo in 2010. Due to failing health, Shirley had recently relocated to Rose Haven Nursing Home.
Shirley enjoyed the birds and gardening. She also liked to travel.
