Hugh Edward Owens, age 81, of Homestead, entered into eternal rest Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy, with Rev. Gary Sears officiating. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Conroy. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to Lutheran Interparish School, Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy or Iowa City Hospice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Hugh is survived by his wife Shirley; his children Hugh Douglas (Sandy) of Oxford, Julie Harriman of North English, Mike (Trilby) of Homestead and Mark (Jeanne) of Homestead; eleven grandchildren Damon Owens (Katie Buswell), Dana (Shaun) Needham, Landon Owens, Trent Harriman, Taylor Harriman, Payton Owens, Cael Owens, Nate Owens, Rebecca Owens (Kody Curtis), Elizabeth Owens, and Michelle Owens; 4 great-grandchildren Cheyanne and Sydney Needham, Noah and Sam Buswell; two sisters Margaret Knapp and Rosemary Pope. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert and a son-in-law Terry Harriman.
Hugh Owens was born June 9, 1935, in Homestead, Iowa, the son of Hugh and Mary Briney Owens. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1954. He was united in marriage to Shirley Martinson on January 25, 1958. Hugh was a farmer and raised shorthorn cattle as well as other livestock. He also worked at other various agricultural related jobs. Hugh was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Homestead MM Collectors Club. He loved taking his 1964 MM 602 (Pea Picker) tractor to shows and parades all over the Midwest. He enjoyed showing cattle and watching his grandchildren show a variety of livestock at the county and state fairs. Hugh especially loved spending time with all of his family and his beloved dog Sadie.
