Henry Joseph Schaier, Jr. age 63, of Marengo, died Thursday, March 19, 2015 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo. Memorial Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2015, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Andrew Gray officiating. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to the Wounded Warrior Project in his name.
Joe is survived by his wife Krystal; his sons, Nicholas and wife Katie of Iowa City, and Christopher and wife Anne Willey of Albuquerque, NM. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Henry Joseph Schaier, Jr. was born September 17, 1951 in Agana, Guam, the son of Henry Joseph and Mildred Riedel Schaier. He attended various schools over the years because his father was a member of the United States Air Force. Joe graduated from Novato High School in California with the Class of 1969. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1976, traveling to Texas, the Philippines and Maryland. There he met Krystal Voigtman and the couple were married on January 6, 1984 at Annapolis, MD. Following the births of his two sons, the family moved to Hawaii and Colorado, where Joe eventually retired from the military and relocated to Iowa in 1996. Joe was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.
Joe was employed at Amana Refrigeration as a quality analyst. He was active with the American Legion Post 76, and the Marengo Golf Club. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. He also was an avid bowler. Joe and his sons spent many hours together involved with Boy Scout activities. He was a wonderful father and husband and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
