David Ray Schlesselman, age 69, of Brooklyn, passed away Friday, December 9, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 15, 2016, at Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn, Iowa, with Rev. Brent de Silva officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2016, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
David was survived by his wife Becky; two children Ray Schlesselman of Brooklyn and Kathy (Henning) Bilgrav of Denmark; four grandchildren David and Robert Schlesselman and Kate and Ian Bilgrav; two siblings James Schlesselman and Nancy (Philip) Ehlers; and many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents.
David Schlesselman was born June 25, 1947, in Guernsey, the son of Ray Russel and Frances Maxine Morrow Schlesselman. He graduated from BGM in 1965 and started farming the family farm. David was united in marriage to Rebecca Merck in 1966. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past summer. David worked various occupations, but mainly over the road truck driving for many years. He owned his own truck and always made an effort to be home for Ray and Kathy’s school and church activities. He had a variety of interests and hobbies. He volunteered for the Boy Scouts, enjoyed mink, ferrets, flowers, logging, honey bees and playing cards. His grandchildren were the joy of his life.
