Grace Lacher Schmahl, age 91 of Marengo, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Rose Haven Nursing Home, Marengo. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M. Thursday December 10, Saint John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo. Visitation: 4-7 P.M. Wednesday December 9, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Grace is survived by a son Edward Lacher (Karol) of Williamsburg, IA; a daughter Rosetta Hunzelman of Orlando, Florida; five grandchildren, Terri Hunzelman, Wendy Lewis, Gary Hunzelman, Rodney Hunzelman and Marilyn Hulseburg; and seven great grandchildren, Heather Conrad, Krista and Ryan Hulseburg, Joshua and Jeremy Lewis and Hayley and Makayla Hunzelman.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Max Lacher and Clarence Schmahl, a brother Arnold Andes, and two sisters, Lucille Hamos and Edna Peterson.
Grace Elphina Andes was born January 1, 1918 in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Nellie Zeller Andes. She received her education in the Iowa County schools and married Max Lacher on November 17, 1937 in Marengo. To this union two children were born, Edward and Rosetta. Max died in 1972. Grace married Clarence Schmahl on May 1, 1979 in Marengo. He died in 1981.Grace was employed as a cook at the Homestead Inn for many years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo.
