Military Honors will be conducted at the church. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.
Ray is survived by his children, Jim Starkweather (Val) of Marengo, Sandy Lorenz (Kelly) of Marengo, Sandra Ruhd (Tim) of Cedar Rapids, Sharon Steele (Edward) of West Des Moines, Shelly Steele-Smith (Duane) of Marengo and Stacy Barker (Brian) of Cedar Rapids; sixteen grandchildren,Taylor and wife Skylar, Paige and fiance Tim, Daniel, Christopher, Samantha, Nicole, Kayla, Skye, Paulina, Jackie, Savannah, Davis, Robert, Dawson, Dane and Miles; and two great-grandchildren Jack and Brayden. Also surviving are his siblings, Arthur Steele (Linda) of Eldon, MaryAlice Bickford (Jerry) of Selma, Judy Findlay of Marengo, Becky Howard of Fairfield, Faye Boyd (Larry) of Pleasant Plaine, and Joyce Mills (Frank) of Fairfield.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Alice Woodard Steele, his wife Marsha Armstrong, a son Jack and a nephew Timothy Steele.
Raymond Theodore Steele was born October 27, 1951 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Francis Hubert and Alice P. Woodard Steele. He attended Cardinal of Eldon schools. Ray served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973, stationed on the USS Saratoga in the Philippines during the Vietnam Conflict. He married Dorita Lisondra on August 8, 1973 in Ottumwa. The couple later divorced. Ray married Marsha Armstrong in 1981. She died in 1994.
Ray was a mechanic and worked for various area businesses. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting and gambling. He was a “gear head” and liked tinkering with any mechanical items. Most of all, he enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends.
