Gertrude Gesina Vogt, age 92 of Williamsburg, formerly of Homestead, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, July 23, 2011. She passed away at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City following a courageous 12 year battle with lymphoma. Funeral Services: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, July 26, 2011, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo, with Pastor Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation: 4 to 7 P.M. Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo. Memorials may be contributed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Hour, or the charity of the donors’ choice. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
Gertrude is survived by her husband of 70 years, Murlen Vogt; a son Ronald Vogt (Rosella) of Homestead; a daughter Donna Blythe (Daryl) of Williamsburg; a daughter-in-law, Lorraine Vogt of Tiffin; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren: Mark Vogt of Homestead, Kerri Vogt of Wheatridge, CO, Keith Vogt (Sandy) and daughter Evangeline Vogt of Cedar Rapids; Becky Esser (Darin) of Cedar Rapids; Christine Fluegel (Jeff) and family Ashley and Logan Fluegel of Janesville, WI; Jon Vogt of Tiffin, Dr. Jeff Blythe (Darcy) and family Paige, Nolan and Clayton Blythe of Orange City; Curt Blythe (Mary) of Williamsburg and family Trenton Blythe (Molly) of Boston, MA, and Holden Blythe (Kelly Schafbuch), Austin and Corbin Blythe of Williamsburg; Matt Blythe (Robin) and family Garrett and Gage Blythe of Williamsburg; and Stacey Cremeens (Aron) and family Tyler Cremeens, Dillon Blythe, Cole Cremeens, and Carlee Cremeens of Williamsburg. Also surviving is a brother Vernon Sandersfeld (Esther) of Homestead, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Lowell Vogt, 3 sisters, Ida Witte, Alma Mueller and Erna Maas, two brothers, Martin and Elmer Sandersfeld, and an infant brother and sister Wayne and Lavera. Also preceding are sisters-in-law, Ruth Sandersfeld, Cleone Sandersfeld, Anna Rose Sandersfeld, Esther Sandersfeld, and Helen Vogt, and brothers-in-law, August Maas, Martin Witte, Elmer Mueller and Eldon Vogt.
Gertrude Gesina Sandersfeld was born April 11, 1919 in Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of George and Gesina Stienke Sandersfeld. She was baptized on May 11, 1919 and confirmed on March 20, 1932 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead. Gertrude attended St. John’s Lutheran Parochial School. She was united in marriage to Murlen Phillip Vogt on November 28, 1940 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Homestead. She was a homemaker, and spent many hours baking pies at Bill Zuber’s Restaurant and the Homestead Kitchen. The couple resided on a farm near Homestead for 63 years, and in March of 2004 they moved to Highland Ridge Retirement Village in Williamsburg.
Gertrude was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marengo, St. John’s Ladies Aid and also taught Sunday school for many years. Besides her pies, she was well known for her wonderful butterhorns. She greatly enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending their activities. |
