Dorothy E. Day, age 86, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following an extended illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2006 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Marengo with Rev. Douglas Morton officiating. Burial will be in the Marengo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, February 17, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan Kreis (Bob) of Marengo, Margaret Foster (Charles) of Salinas, CA, and Donna Bixler (John) of Oskaloosa; 6 grandchildren, Mike Foster, Robert D. Kreis, Betty Rae Kreis, Jim Bixler, John Bixler, and Laurie Valsters, and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Pershing Day in 2001, a daughter, Betty Rae and a son, Jim Day.

Dorothy Elizabeth Durling, daughter of John and Emma Obermuller Durling, was born, July 17, 1919 at her parents’ home in Marengo, which is now the office of Dr. Susan Davis. By the age of 6, Dorothy was a self-taught piano player and at age 7, she was playing the accordion. She graduated from the Marengo High School in 1937 and operated a beauty shop for several years. She married Robert Pershing Day on March 8, 1953 in LaCrosse, WI. The couple resided in Chicago for several years, returning to Marengo in 1974. Besides being a homemaker and a mother, Dorothy was a member of the Curtis Bennett Band, playing the accordion. She performed at Carl Oehl's restaurant, the Cellar, and at the Colony Market Place in South Amana, and later at Zuber's in Homestead. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Marengo.
