Ruth Anne Shields Johnson was born September 6, 1925 in Belle Plaine, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to Walter W. “Tubby” and Marjorie Greenlee Shields. She attended the Belle Plaine schools and graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1943. Ruth enrolled in Pitzy’s Beauty School in Waterloo and graduated in 1945. She married Charles E. “Chuck” Johnson on October 20, 1946n at the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine. The couple resided in Waterloo for four years and then returned to Belle Plaine. She owned and operated a beauty shop there for many years. Ruth Anne departed this life on February 5, 2006.
Chuck and Ruth were the parents of three children, a son Terry Lee, who died at birth, a daughter Margo Sievers and husband Ron, of Rembrandt, Iowa and a daughter Dawn Francis and husband, Boyd, of Marengo, Iowa. There are also two grandsons, two granddaughters, two great-grandsons, and two step grandchildren.
Ruth Anne belonged to Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron in 1960. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Belle Plaine, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society and many card clubs. She loved to play cards, bake and “tell stories.” She also enjoyed Big Band era music and embroidery work. Wherever she went, she enjoyed teasing others—there was always a twinkle in her eyes and a bit of “quick wit” on her lips. Her personality, positive attitude, and inner strength were among her greatest assets.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Chuck, a son Terry, a sister, Gaynelle Heller and two brothers, Walter and Russell Shields. She leaves her two daughters, their husbands, four grandchildren and families, two step grandchildren, her aunt, Mrs. Pat Greenlee, and many loving family members and wonderful friends.
We are saddened by her loss, but renewed in the celebration of her life! May all who knew her…smile, remember her fondly, and pass the smile on! |
