Melvin E. Schmidt, age 73 of Vinton, formerly of Williamsburg, died Monday, April 10, 2006 from injuries suffered in a car accident in Vinton. Graveside services: 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 13, 2006, Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg with Rev. Frederick Wood officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 P.M. Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at the family home, 510 West 15 th St.,Vinton. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Marilea; 2 daughters, Nancie (Tony) Patterson of Aplington and Julie (Don) Danielson of Vinton; a granddaughter, Rachel Patterson of Aplington; 3 brothers, Orlen (Kay) of Altoona, Loren (Marcia) of Gladbrook, and Marvin (Margene) of Waverly; a sister, Marlene ( Arnold) Cornelius of Janesville; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Melvin Edward Schmidt was born May 8, 1932 near Oxford, Iowa, the eldest son of Ervin and Miriam Jones Schmidt. He graduated from Conroy High School in 1950 and married Marilea Querl on September 1, 1956 in Williamsburg, Iowa. Melvin owned and operated Mel Schmidt Building and Construction in Williamsburg, building houses in the area. He moved to Vinton in 1980 where he operated Mel Schmidt Roofing and Urethane Products for 20 years. While semi-retired, Mel operated Mel’s Redemption Center. Most recently he was employed part-time at the Fast Stop Convenience Store in Vinton. He enjoyed being outdoors, doing lawn work and gardening and especially enjoyed attending his granddaughter’s sports events.
