L. Eugene Smith, age 70 of Vinton, formerly of Marengo and Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, June 3, 2006 at his home in Vinton, following a sudden illness. Funeral Services: 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo with Rev. Morris Hurd officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Marengo. Friends may call from 4 to 7 P.M. Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo. A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include a son, David and wife Lori of West Des Moines; two daughters, Teresa Kroul and husband Greg of Damascus, MD, and Cherlyn Wright and husband Ross of Batavia, IA; 9 grandchildren, Jason Kroul, Amy Chehi, Roselind Smith, Colton Smith, Tiffany Spray, Whitney Wright, Caitlyn Wright, Lindy Wright, and Jared Wright; 4 great-grandchildren, Chase, Tyler and Kaden Kroul and Madison Chehi. Also surviving are three sisters, LaVonne Hawkins of Brooklyn, Sharon McComb of Longmont, CO, and Donna Throndson and husband Larry of Hiawatha. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marilyn on May 1, 1988, a niece, and a nephew.

Lowell Eugene Smith was born April 14, 1936 in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Lowell R. and Dorothea Collins Smith. He received his education in the Iowa County Schools and graduated from Marengo High School in 1954. He married Marilyn Margaret Weldon on June 26, 1954 at Marengo. Eugene was employed at Amana Refrigeration. Later he owned and operated the Truckers Inn in Marengo. Prior to retirement, he was an over-the-road trucker.
