| Elizabeth Christine “Betty” Wetjen , age 97, of Amana, died Monday, September 8, 2008 at Colonial Manor of Amana, from complications of advanced age. Memorial Service: 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 11, 2008, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, Iowa with Rev. Wayne Woolery officiating. Inurnment will be in St. John’s Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead, or Essence of Life Hospice, Amana. Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter Maureen Thalacker and husband Ronald of Amana, three grandchildren, John, Steve and Dave Thalacker and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John in 1986, three sisters, Mary Reihman, Louise Haas, and Leni Schuerer, three brothers, Fred, Paul, and William Oehl, and an infant granddaughter.
Elizabeth Christine Oehl was born September 25, 1910 in Amana, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Louise Roemig Oehl. She received her education in the Amana schools and married John Wetjen on November 29, 1952 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, in Homestead, Iowa. Besides being a homemaker, Betty worked at the Amana Woolen Mill, and also was clerk at the Amana Post Office. She served as acting postmaster for a short time. Later in life, Betty worked part time at the Sandstone Winery. Betty was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Homestead.
